Model Product Design
Task:
Design and create a calendar that depicts twelve movies using mixed-media methods and assets.
Concept:
A circular calendar, reminiscent of a compass, divided into twelve slices that contain the dates as well as paper cut light boxes, illuminating one movie for each month.
Time:
4 weeks (conception)
5 weeks (creation)
Preparations
Before cutting, slicing and gluing, there's a lot of thinking and maths to be done. Once the general idea of a circular calender was decided, the transformation of thoughts into reality begins.
Before jumping right into the building of the actual calender, I created a "slice" to assess the amount of effort and time that would go into the entire project
Practice Slice
Wooden Base
The basis of the calender had to be sturdy and durable. So I decided to make that a 1m wide compressed wood plate. My measurements seemed to be right, because the practice slice fit right in. 12 holes for hanging each month at the top and a single big one for the wire were drilled into the wood.
15 meters of light strip were glued to the styrofoam beams placed as seperators between each month and covered with a sheet of linen canvas.
12 Movies
Each month received its own design divided into 5 different layers.
Each layer was printed, traced on thick paper and cut by hand.
Once all months were done, I encased the entire thing with a circle of styrofoam - also cut by hand.
Cover Up
The face of the calendar was designed digitally and printed in A4-batches, cut into shape and glued to a 1m big cap plate.
The sides were wrapped with a flexible and thin kind of cardboard and covered with a design that matches the face.
Final Stand
In case the calender could not be hung from the wall, a stand needed to be made.
I cut it out of a piece of foam, created a wrap that would fit perfectly and extend the design of the calender to its stand.
