Based on the incredible work of the french concept artist Benoit Bernard, I created a real life miniature model of his Qeynos concept piece.

Qeynos is a fictional city in a videogame franchise called "Everquest". In 2013 Sony Online Entertainment anounced the development of a successor to the online videogame series called Everquest Next. Unfortunately the development ceased shortly after Sony Online Entertainment was sold to an investment company. What remained was the concept art and a lot of highly involved fans.

The basic shape of the building is traced on cardboard, cut out and glued together.

Each detail piece is individually cut out of foam and individually glued to the structure. The stones are collected in a container and shaken with actual rocks to create a natural pattern and to take off the hard edges. The wooden beams are foam stripes that are brushed with a metal brush.

After the structural elements are attached, the entire surface is covered with plaster to close gaps and connect pieces that are not close enough together. It is, of course, also used to create the plaster on the wall.

The roof follows the exact same path. Detail foam pieces are individually cut and applied and covered with a thin layer of plaster.

Once the entire model is covered in plaster, it is coated with a mixture of glue, water and black color. Afterwards the main colors are applied.

The real magic happens when the paint layer is covered with a dark wash. It runs down the thinnest cracks and makes a plain surface look detailed and weathered. Fresh colors are painted where necessary and the windows are covered with a special kind of liquid that leaves a shiny finish. Final highlights are being painted on and some areas are brushed over with an almost dry brush. The Qeynos residents can move in now!
